“He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (Isaiah 53:3 NKJV)
Easter is a time to reflect on God’s profound love for us (mankind) and Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. It’s a time to remember the crucifixion, an act that has been considered the most terrifying and painful of all executions. It even birthed the word – Excruciate. Easter is a sobering experience that’s oddly capped off with joyous celebration; one that has no business with bunnies however cute they are. And as for pagan theorists (cause I don’t know of a better word to call them), the date’s irrelevant, the action is what truly counts. The same can be said about Christmas.
But, what can capture the essence of Easter, the love, pain, heartbreak, sorrow, abandon, victory, joy and ascension? The cinephile in me would say – a movie, but I’m yet to see one that truly describes it, especially the horrific details of the crucifixion.
Remember, this song best describes what Easter entails, at least from a musical angle, it may differ for you. The important thing to remember here is how important Easter was/is to the future of humanity, and further … the afterlife.
My Perfect Song for Easter is Hillsong’s Man of Sorrows, and it was released for Easter in 2013. What made it so impactful for me was the fact that it, somehow, brought me closer to God, and it made my understanding of Christ’s sacrifice a little clearer. Listening to it years later still leaves me teary-eyed, always re-connecting my spirit with my creator and Lord. It’s quite an inspiring song, one that always leaves me filled with so much joy. Plus, I got it for free (legally, that is).
It’s truly an honour for Jesus to endure the cross for me.
Have a go at it and please tell me about your Perfect Song for Easter.
God bless you, and have a blessed Easter.
Here are the lyrics
“Man Of Sorrows”
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laidSilent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father’s will
He took a crown of thorns
Oh that rugged cross
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out
Praise and honour unto Thee
Sent of heaven God’s own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree
Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled
Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He’s risen from the grave
